REGISTRATION FOR THE JOINT DTP CONFERENCE 2022 AND ABSTRACT SUBMISSION ARE NOW OPEN
Please fulfill the following form to complete your registration and submit your abstract. The deadline is 1st July 2023.
Please note, only students on the London NERC, SCENARIO, and SSCP DTPs are permitted to submit an abstract for this conference.
Guidelines for abstract submission:
- Abstract submission is not just for those wishing to give a student talk, those wishing to submit a poster must also submit an abstract.
- Abstracts must be a maximum of 300 words.
- Please provide 3 keywords on your submission form to allow us to sort your student talk into relevant categories (keywords will also help us to space your posters in a logical format too!)

Title: Cirrus Cloud Retrievals Exploiting the Far-Infrared
Abstract:
Theoretical models suggest that ∼ 55% of the outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) from Earth is within the far-infrared region, 100-666 cm−1. However, the top-of-atmosphere radiation spectrum in this region has never been measured, something that will change with ESA’s Far-infrared Outgoing Radiation Understanding and Monitoring (FORUM) mission, launching in 2026/27.
Studies have indicated this region is highly sensitive to the microphysics of cirrus clouds, high altitude ice clouds, which regularly cover ∼30% of the Earth. Dependent on their micro and macrophysical properties, cirrus clouds reflect shortwave radiation back to space and trap OLR, influencing Earth’s Radiation Budget. This work seeks to develop a retrieval algorithm to infer the bulk optical properties of cirrus clouds from these new measurements of the far-infrared. This retrieval capability would be the first of its kind to be thoroughly validated in this way and would be available for use on FORUM observations.
Current retrieval algorithms for ice cloud optical parameters exist within the visible, mid, and near-infrared regions and use the optimal estimation (OE) approach to infer these parameters from upwelling spectra. Infrared Microwave Sounder (IMS) currently uses wavenumbers within these regions for simultaneous retrievals of the atmospheric vertical profile and cloud optical properties from EUMETSAT METOP satellites. This scheme will be extended into the far-infrared, and its performance tested, by exploiting unique airborne data of clear-sky and cloudy data to improve retrievals of water vapour, and later cirrus clouds.
